TREIA STUDIOS

working at the confluence of art & ecology

In the search for my own reconciliation between nature and culture, I came to the realization that humans learn and understand deeply through experiential stimulus in our bodies.  It was through this embodied knowledge that I began to create human-powered sculptures as a means for activating ecologically focused installations.

My projects contextually link industrial resource use and consumptive human behaviour with environmental problems specific to place. The installations centre on an object chosen for its nostalgic and historical reference, such as the boat, the train, the automobile, etc.  These objects are the entry point to the installations, providing the means for physical interaction to generate the electricity necessary to activate the work.

As each project increases in technical complexity, the contexts become broader and more layered.  I realize a shift is happening toward a greater connection to the human experience that personalizes the issues addressed.  For this reason I see my role of artist as facilitator, weaving the contrasting experiences of regional voices and global influences with scientific information and industry practice, in order to raise awareness about our ecological crisis.

As my work continues to cross disciplines, I actively seek to collaborate on projects with community members as well as professionals in the sciences, engineering and architecture. My projects are an opportunity for learning; from the art-lab process of prototyping to production, through an aesthetic approach that bridges art and science, bringing these once diametric practices together to serve contemporary social contexts.
